The Sidmouth Valkyries report by Aaron Patch, Director of women’s and girls Rugby, Sidmouth

The long-awaited 2nd game saw the Sidmouth women travel up to Thornbury. A long way to go, but a great setting for a full day of rugby for Sidmouth.
Thornbury being a well-established team and the Valkyries nerves maybe getting the better of them saw an early try soon after kick off. A quick regroup saw the nerves disappear and some great rugby was on the cards.
With some great defence and great pressure we saw Thornbury make a few handling errors leading to a lot of scrums. It was clear where Sidmouth had the upper hand and not one scrum was lost during the whole game.
Player of note here was Kellie Welch playing flanker for the first time, a position I now believe she was born to play.
Thornbury found some space and put 2 more tries on the board before half time score 17-0
Thornbury come out strong and it looked like their team talk at half time worked because now, with very few handling errors, they took full advantage of space and the inexperience of Sidmouth, running up a big lead. Sidmouth never once gave up and put in some big tackles, sadly leading to the captain Sas Hunt Wood having to sit the rest of the game out,
Unfortunately all of Sidmouth’s hard work did not pay off with a try, although they where so close to the line a fair few times.
The Valkyries should not feel too disappointed, there performance was fantastic, their team sprit and support for each other was unbelievable, true rugby values by both teams. Myself and our coaching team could not be prouder. After the game the home team captain approached me and could not believe that was only our second game! Some good positives to take away and some areas to work on.
Choosing the player of the day was not an easy task but well done to Gemma Rose and Em Shayler who jointly took this. Well deserved.
The day was finished of by sharing a drink with our opponents  and watching Sidmouth Men play Thornbury.
Next game is away to Crediton 2pm 13TH March
Everybody is welcome to join us on a Wednesday Eve or Sunday afternoon
