Under 9s - Honiton Festival

 plate start

Sidmouth entered 2 teams, the Warriors and the Vikings,  into the 2016 Devon U9 competition in Honiton last Sunday

Sidmouth Warriors played their 2 pool matches against Okehampton and Tiverton.  The initial match against a strong Okehampton side was a time for Alexander Goody on the left wing to shine running in 2 of the 5 tries in the 5-2 victory. In the second match Tiverton proved to be too strong defeating the Warriors 4-3 despite determined defence and running by Jack Pugh who eventually had to be taken off due to injuries. Harry Finch on the right wing and Laisey Jackson in the centre also put up a great tackling defence. Given the results the Warriors were through to the Plate.

Sidmouth Vikings kicked off the tournament in glorious sunshine against Newton Abbott with Alec Bagwell as Captain. In the squad were Zac & Luca Arver, Thomas Grove, Thomas Bird, Archie Rowcliffe, Toby Sanford, Charley Turley and Gyll Gray. A 6:0 win over Newton Abbott with good strong running and tackling throughout the team.We lost our next game 4-2, with Zac Arver as captain, was against a strong tackling Torquay side who showed our runners that off loading the ball before the contact is an important part of the game. The Vikings were in the Plate too !

A good lunch was then laid on by Honiton RFC who kindly hosted and organised the tournament.Post lunch it was time for the knock out part of the tournament with a quarter final game against Barnstaple  with Archie Rowcliffe captaining the Vikings to an 8:0 win. This led to a semi final game against Paignton.Having played them last week we knew it would be a tough game. However, Toby Sanford captained the team to a 4:1 win and onto the final the Vikings marched.

The Warriors quarter final against Ivybridge proved to be a great match with players showing there true mettle after injuries in the pool stage meant Jack Pugh, Laisey Jackson and Harry Finch could no longer play. Luca Arver also came across from the Vikings as a sub to make up the numbers. Again Alexander Goody running the wings made impressive inroads but the turning point of the game was the great tackling from all players including Ben Brook, Reece Hext, Leon Rowley and William Allen but especially Harry Wood who has found his position as full back and cut down every player that came his way. Luca Arver though was player of this match as he put in 5 tackles in a row at one stage to win turnover ball and force himself over a couple of Ivybridge
players and the line.

The semifinal was against Honiton and the Warriors lost marginally despite the reduced team putting up an awesome defence. All round the Warriors had done themselves proud and narrowly missed meating the Sidmouth Vikings in the final!

The final was the Sidmouth Vikings vs Honiton, with many of the players knowing each other, bragging rights were up for grabs. Gyll Gray captained the side for the tense final game with tries from Charley Turley, Thomas Grove and Toby Sanford. Sidmouth Vikings finished the tournament with a good 4:0 win and were crowned Devon RFU U9 Plate Winners.

All the players and parents expressed how much they had enjoyed the day which had been well organised by Honition RFC with the key values of rugby, teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship been displayed throughout the day.
