Sidmouth Vs Withycombe U8s

Another dry morning saw us welcome Withycombe to Sidford this week. After our obligatory bulldog warm up session and some small sided games of touch we put our smart new shirts on before joining the rest of the age groups in paying tribute, with a minute of applause, to Lily Partridge from Topsham based Exonian Rugby Club who tragically died on Monday 7th December.

With 21 players available to us, we were able to split into 3 equal teams with everyone getting to play for the maximum amount of time and all of us getting a crack at the opposition.

Withycombe brought 10 players who were well drilled and a good test for our players. The first game was a tight affair with lots of good support play by both teams but the precision of Withycombe saw them edge ahead by 4 scores to 2. There was notable defence and straight running by Jerry Min and customary darting runs by Tyler Jackson and Will Russell which was great to see.

Game 2 was played at a high pace with some startling play from the Sidmouth boys, lots of tagging, defence and crazy running from every member of the team led to a solid 6-2 win with Isaac Wall “allegedly” scoring 3 tries but we’re waiting for the TMO (Television Match Official)  to confirm!

The 3rd game was another tight affair, Leah Patch and Daniel White both did very well having only just started playing rugby while Lucas Vicary and Ollie Marchant both showed their usual grit and determination to do well. Withycombe exhausted their supply of substitutes but still played very well with a better starting platform than Sidmouth – something to work on in the New Year – but couldn’t quite maintain their earlier precision and Sidmouth eaked a 4-3 win with the final game scores ending in Sidmouths favour 2 to 1.

With all the excellent play from all 21 kids, choosing our final player of the week was a tough job for the coaches but Alex Harvey got the nod for embodying Rugby’s Core Values of: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship throughout the day – Well Done Alex! with that we bid you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, we look forward to training again on Sunday 3rd January when winter might be upon us – so wrap up warm!
