Under 8s

Welcome to Sidmouth Under 8s Tag Rugby

Rugby is a great game enjoyed by players, coaches, parents, spectators and volunteers. The Sidmouth under 8s team’s key focus is enjoyment. Tag Rugby is a simple game that is quickly picked up by children encouraging them to learn the basics of catching and passing. It’s safe, non-contact nature makes this fun activity the RFU’s official version of the game for under 8.

This year we also see some changes to the ‘Rules of Play’ for our mini section. After a period of RFU trials in three counties over the last few years the new rules have now been adopted by Devon RFU and also our surrounding counties, as a point of interest the research evidence highlighting the need for a change in the coaching and playing structure of games in the lower age groups has come through Exeter University.

The new rules aim to focus more on individual players skill sets, allowing small sided games to increase inclusion and involvement, increase enjoyment and also simplify the rules of the game, which will in turn allow games to flow and develop more effectively the intention of this approach is to reduce the number of players dropping out of the game over these very important and impressionable years.

We meet on Sunday mornings 10am from September - May at our Sidford training ground, the first few weeks of the season are spent learning the basics of the game and then we have scheduled a number of local fixtures against teams such as Exmouth, Withycombe, Honiton, Bridport, Teignmouth, Cullompton, Exeter Chiefs and Topsham.

Under 8s level is all about having fun and allowing the children to develop basic rugby skills. We have a limited focus on rules, structure and drills as children learn best and gain most enjoyment by doing and taking part. Our games are played on a smaller pitch with fewer players in each team ensuring that all who play get the maximum time involved in the game. Simpler rules enable players to learn and develop their game over the years.

We are fortunate to have a great coaching team that are committed to helping players develop themselves as young people as well as rugby players.  A supportive parent/volunteer group helps make the whole rugby experience a team affair and highly enjoyable for player and adults alike.

With limited focus on rules and regulations and to encourage open play with less start/stop

The basic rules of the U8 Tag game are as follows:

       -  No contact

       -  No kicking of any kind

       -  When a tag is made, the tagger stops running, holds the tag and shouts “TAG!”

       -  When the ball-carrier is tagged, the ball must be passed to a team mate

       -  Competitive matches should not be more than 6 a side

       -  Coach as referee

       -  45 m x 22 m pitch (max)

       -  Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship

So why not come along and join our rugby family at Sidmouth RFC - even better why not bring some of your friends and classmates along as well. Our season starts this year on Sunday 3rd September 2017 at 10am at our Blackmore Ground in the centre of Sidmouth, directions and a map can also be found on the home page. This will be a welcome session for all new players and our first training session of the new season.
