Under 7’s “Along the coast we go “

As our 2014/15 season comes to a close last weekend Sidmouth Under 6’s & 7’s returned to Exmouth RFC for our penultimate fixture of the season, also joined by a contingent from Cirencester RFC in Gloucestershire whom were “on tour” for the weekend in East Devon.

Exmouth as one of the largest club’s in the area put out 5 teams with Sidmouth’s raiding party mustering a respectable 4 teams and our Cirencester Coltswoldian’s also putting out 2 teams. This number of players shows that Rugby is a highly popular sport throughout the Westcountry and also shows great enthusiasm of our young teams to travel locally as well as thanks to the band of parents that bring their children along, week on week come rain and shine.

Another fantastic warm sunny day for this time of year provided the perfect conditions, so a great deal of local rivalry and Devonian pride ensued across all of the matches played.  All teams were able to impress with displays of some great rugby skills, Exmouth provided not only great hospitality but along with Cirencester they both proved to be a strong opposition with well drilled and skilful teams. Like ourselves many of their players are new to Tag rugby this year however they all put in a great team effort and are a credit to their respective coaching teams whom have nurtured these players for the past 8 month.

Sidmouth Player of the match was awarded to Sam Smart who provided an entertaining display of precision passing, top rate tagging and teamwork to score a number of superb individual tries. With 60 + players involved across all teams and over 20 games being played, a tally of over 100 tries scored, the end result of the day were wins and losses for all sides, equating to an overall draw for the Sidmouth Players that seems to be a feature of our season to date, with the true overall winner being Rugby itself.

Our thanks yet again to go to our hosts Exmouth RFC as well as our Gloucestershire visitors , next week is our final match of the regular season as we travel up the River Exe to Topsham before heading off ourselves “on Tour” to Cornwall to play Peranporth and Wadebridge RFC. We are welcoming new players to our  Under 6’s and 7’s ready for the start of the new season in September 2015 and so if your son or daughter is age 5 / 6 or 7 currently, would like to try our great game “Tag Rugby” and to join our rugby family them please visit the excellent Simouth RFC Junior’s website.
