Local Derby For Under 7s

Sidmouth U7s v Topsham, 8 December 2013

It was the last fixture before Christmas, on a crisp clear December day, with the whiff of a local derby in the air, and another great turn out by Sidmouth U7s; three boys teams anda team of girls took on Topsham, away, this Sunday.

The speed and intensity of play was notched up another level this week; notably sharper zig zag running, dinking sidestepsand timely offloading of the ball coupled with much stronger defensive lines to demonstrate their progress this season.

In one match, brimming emotions demanded firm discipline from the referee, revealing the intensity of the competition.  With morale intact Sidmouth fought hard, Charley Turley running in a typically ‘snakey’ try on the final whistle to level the game 11 all.

Meanwhile the girls U7/8 team continued to take the boys to task, demonstrating exceptional tactical awareness with their movement of the ball, and some bold, scything running by new girl Annabel Bird.

Elsewhere the boys competed bravelyAnnabel’s brother TomBird also stood out with his determined, robust running taking his side to victoryand Matthew Thomas showed himself to be the playmaker in a match where honours were even.

With all four teams playing side by side it was a great spectacle of junior rugby.  Overall the contest was superbly balanced and well fought, setting the stage perfectly for the return fixtureto be hosted by Sidmouth in the Spring.
