Sidmouth U16's v Bournemouth U16's

The U16s hosted a 50 strong friendly party from Bournemouth, many attired in Edwardian seaside costume, including a stunning Lady from Little Britain. In the early stages Bournemouth showed why they are unbeaten by dominating the game and taking the lead through their right winger but as the match settled down it looked clear that if Sidmouth could produce quick ball they might have the beating of the visitors.

From the first decent bit of possession the ball was   moved to Harry Thomas who executed a perfect  give-and-take under pressure to give full-back  Faulkner enough space to beat the defence and touchdown. The visitors struck back with another try and Sidmouth levelled through the impressive Haydon Down. Bournemouth then opted to take the points from a penalty leaving them 13-10 up. Sidmouth made good use of rolling substitutions and managed to give 23 players games, but at the same time brought pressure on themselves by fluffing a kick-off and losing three scrums in a row.

Desperate defence kept the scores close and when Thomas and Faulkner got another half chance they managed to find room for the latter to get his second to take Sidmouth into the lead for the first time with 6 minutes to go. Under pressure the team held firm and a crucial turnover by Goddard and Gilby sealed the victory. To put the Sidmouth win into context Bournemouth backed-up this game the following day with a match against a strong Torquay side, which they won 35-0.  For Sidmouth this good win sets-up the U16s for a league play-off semi-final against Okehampton, followed next weekend by a tour to Dublin helped by sponsorship from Michelmores Solicitors and Allwood Timber Frames
