Sidmouth Vs Newton Abbot U16s

After a lacklustre 7-7 draw with Cullompton the previous week, Sidmouth were keen to get back to winning form against Newton Abbot. They started well, with an early try from Lewis Pearson converted by George Harris. However a series of missed tackles and a penalty gave Newton easy ground and lifted their tempo; a brace of tries quickly followed to give the away team a 12-7 lead. Undeterred, Sidmouth remained focused and moved the ball well, retained their composure and shape to provide Mead the space to open his legs and go over and edge Sidmouth into a 14-12 lead at half time.

Sidmouth's forwards were a match for the Newton front line and eventually provided space for Harris to chip a cheeky ball over the oppositions back line which Oli Perez smuggled over the line in a well worked move;19-12. Sidmouth then began to play more confidently and a text book team move ended in a deserved try from Ethan Mead and what felt a winning score of 24-12 with 4 minutes to go.

However, its never over until the final whistle blows and Newton forced a nervous Sidmouth error and gained possession to go in under the posts and edge within 5points with a minute to go. Nervous shuffling of boots on the sidelines ensued. Fear not; wily Oli Perez saved the day with a well read interception in what was looking like an overload situation and perceptible sigh of relief from the home fans floated across the pitch as Sidmouth slammed home a deserved win 29-19.
