Under 16 v Topsham

U 16s   Sidmouth 14: 31 Topsham   23.11.14

‘A game of two halves’

Topsham started strongly from their kick off securing the ball in Sidmouth territory and scored from a penalty advantage within the first minutes of the game. Sidmouth responded well, play moved to the Topsham half and a try seemed imminent but they were pushed into touch. Topsham regained possession and worked their way back downfield where smooth passes and safe hands produced a second try.  A conversion brought the score to 12:0. Stout defending by Sidmouth held up one Topsham attempt but they scored two further tries to bring a frustrating first half to a close at 26:0

The second half saw Sidmouth gaining confidence and momentum. Early on,Sidmouth pressure brought them ever closer to the try line and it was Chugg-White who took the ball over to score their first try. Allen was in good kicking form and secured a solid conversion. Play continued largely in the Topsham half. The Sidmouth scrum was good with some excellent hooking by Davies. A great run by Allen promised further success but the try was held up by the home team.  Eventually a further Topsham try ensued but was not converted. There were dramatic moments for Sidmouth.  Lau kicked the ball through the Topsham defence and beat them to the ball. Knowing his speed Sidmouth supporters were hopeful that he would continue unchallenged but a quick Topsham player stopped his momentum. However, Sidmouth continued to fight their way forward and Innes-Kruger scoredAllen converted again. 2 converted tries to Sidmouth in the second half and one try to Topsham.

Although Topsham had claimed overall victory 31:14 with a significant point accumulation in the first half, loyal supporters felt that Sidmouth had been the winners of the second half!
