U16's give close and exciting match

Under 16s Sidmouth 31 v Exeter 33         2.11.14

Another sunny Sunday and another exciting match against Exeter.Sidmouth started strongly and attempts at an early try by Exeter’s no 8 were thwarted twice by good Sidmouth defence and assertive tackles by Johnson-Graves and Dix. Strong Sidmouth scrums and good hands followed and Down was first to score. Exeter countered, putting some good phases together, resulting in a quick tap penalty and try. Further Exeter pressure was defended strongly by Sidmouth but eventually Exeter prevailed to score again under the posts. Undeterred, Sidmouthresponded well. Lau demonstrated one of his trade-mark tries andconversion was good. Strong runs from Chugg-White and Barnett and efficient recycling gave Barnett a well-deserved try and further pressure from Sidmouth attacks produced a try for Innes-Kruger. Sidmouthfinished the first half ahead 24:14

In the 2nd half Exeter used the slope of the pitch well and got the first try in the corner. Exeter replacements provided fresh legs who proved their worth with a further try despite tough Sidmouth tackling and dogged defence. Due to absences, Sidmouth only had a squad of 13 which had been further depleted to 12 in the first half because of injury so their achievement in keeping heads up and the pressure on was, therefore, all the more praiseworthy. But tired legs were beginning to show and Exeter scored a good breakaway try. However, Sidmouth speedily responded with a high kick-off which impressive Davies chased and caught setting Innes-Kruger up for his 2nd trySidmouth’s determineddefence continued and they held up or averted several Exeter attacks on their try line. Sidmouth never let up the pressure and were within a whisker of what would have been a well-deserved final try. It was Exeter who looked relieved when the final whistle went as stoic Sidmouth were still on the attack.

All of Sidmouth’s squad played well and should be proud of their solidperformance and good result against the odds.
