Sidmouth 12   Exeter Chiefs 20

Sidmouth’s green army entertained the might of Exeter Youth and came close to an upset last Sunday. With 6 strong lads unavailable due to a school field trip to the Battlefields the U14s had to rearrange key personel.

Front row players often go unsung, but they provide an invaluably strong platform from which the rest of the team launch their attacks. With our regular front 3 missing Jack Jenkins, Max Dix & Oli Jones performed admirably against a well drilled opposition. The half back pairing of Cole Monaghan and Archie Rowe were a new combination as well and worked hard to set the team’s 3s in motion. However, it was Exeter who broke the deadlock early on and things looked ominous.

The greens worked hard in defence and Josh Golding and Owen Tidball came close with counter attacks. Exeter then scored their second to lead 10-0 at half time. All the subs came on for the second half and Mattie Laurenti set the tone for a comeback with several sweet plays – catching at full tilt and driving forward hard. Jo Elsworth then chose his moment to score and convert. Exeter then capitalised on a fumble to score only for the quicksilver Golding to romp in again and make it a Cliff-hanger. In the dying moments Exeter took the result out of reach with a score from a driving maul and when the final whistle blew it was they who deservedly took the honours.
