Withycombe Vs Sidmouth U13s

Devon Cup Quarter Final

Withycombe 7 - 22 Sidmouth

On an overcast day with a sticky muddy pitch Sidmouth travelled to local rivals Withycombe to play in the Devon Cup quarter final.

In the past Withy had always proved stubborn opponents and they did not disappoint.

The main difference in the first half was Sidmouths speed out wide. This became apparent in the 5th and 11th minute when their very own Billy Wizz, James Nicholls raced 2/3rds of the pitch after excellent work by the forwards, to score 2 great tries.

Shortly after, with the wind in their sails, following several strong phases of play, Will Bond found a gap and pounced from short range to score, Kris Purkis converting.

The half was played out with Withy in the ascendancy with Sidmouth seemingly thinking their job was done! Half time oranges were served with some home truths from the coaches and the Sidmouth boys duly responded with probably the best 20 minutes of rugby we have seen from them. Complete dominance for phase after phase ending with a deft grubber kick from Charlie McCaig picked up brilliantly by Calvin Clifford who scored in the corner, possibly the try of the season!

As a contest it was game over apart from a last second break away try by the ever resilient Withycombe which they converted thus ending a very entertaining game and great result.

All that's left as we head into a 3 week break is to wish all the squad and their wonderful parents a very merry Christmas and see you all in the new year.
