Sidmouth U11s at the Land Rover Trophy.

The Under 11 entourage hit the rubber crumb at Exeter Chiefs last Sunday with a design on this prestigious tournament.

Topsham were the first up opponents and Sidmouth ruthlessly put them to the sword 4 tries to 1 with a dominant forward display from Harley, Jack Jenkins and Coler. Sam Bond’s bullocking  run resulting in the best try of the game. Newton Abbott provided the next obstacle with Sidmouth fumbling to a poor start and conceding early. Josh Roberts had different ideas though, kicking beautifully and rampaging to an equalising try. Big Henry and Rafe put in stellar performances up front and Jack Turbitt tackled his heart out but despite Archie’s twinkling toes Sidmouth could not find the winner and drew 1-1.

The final game in the pool pitted the hungry East Devonians against Newquay and boy were the lads up for it. A gargantuan battle ensued with the surfers taking the lead only to be thwarted by Louis stampeding to an equaliser. Only a win would see us through so out came the kitchen sink and Sidmouth’s opportunity presented itself - penalty five yards out. Big Finlay Johnson stuffed it up his jumper in a crash ball crescendo and stormed at the line. Aided by our pack’s heaving heroics his irresistible force breached the opposition line but in the kerfuffle to ground the ball it got spilled and the ref shook his head !! The crowd gasped and the coaches groaned as the final draw saw Sidmouth unbeaten but unable to progress to the next round. Special mention must go to our vocal supporters and Patrick for another solid performance.
