Epic battle for Cullompton –v- Sidmouth

A 15 strong Sidmouth team travelled to Cullompton on a warm and sunny Sunday morning; Sidmouth Under 10’s had their unbeaten record to maintain and Cullompton, always worthy opponents, were fielding a strong team.  Both were able to put together two teams and a mini tournament was held.

In the first game, Ben Fisher tackled with the heart of a lion and together with Will Bolton, Will Cockayne-Cottrell, James Dalton and Ryan Cozens the tackling by Sidmouth was superb; the energy levels were kept up through two very tough games.  Cullompton worked extremely hard and made it through an excellent defensive line, only narrowly losing the first game to Sidmouth 3-4.

The second game was equally close with great ball skills being shown by Louis Cornick, Oliver Bond, Will Bolton and Sam Cole.  Again the Sidmouth defence put up a fine fight, grimly sticking to their line and showing maturity and determination not to give up to take a win from Cullompton of 4-3.  All tries were scored by the fastest legs on the pitch, Will Bolton.

On the other side of the pitch Sidmouth were again doing well.  There was good, consistent play and tackling, driving the ball forward by Freddie Barker and Oliver Mitchell.  Finlay Hobday, Charlie Roberts, Freddie Roberts and Laurence Walker did a fine job of tackling, Laurence being consistent and clean in bring down each of his excellent tackles.  Oliver Mitchell made the most of his opportunities in stealing the ball when able and driving through the field.  Gabriel Roberts had another successful game, flying down the field, to score 6 of the 8 tries for Sidmouth.  Man of the match, Will Crick gave great passes, often making the last critical pass to the scoring tries for Sidmouth.   Although Sidmouth lost their first game 3-5, they won their 2nd 5-2

All the under 10’s were to be congratulated on their excellent play, as a team they gelled well to communicate and play as a unit.  This was by far our hardest set of games of this season, but the wins were all the sweeter for that.
