Under 10s

Welcome to Sidmouth Under 10s

Rugby is a great game enjoyed by players, coaches, parents, spectators and volunteers. The Sidmouth under 10s team’s key focus is enjoyment for the children. Although we started playing contact rugby last year making the step up from Tag Rugby, we don’t actually want the children to get into contact, we want them to evade the opposition and run into space.

This year we also see some changes to the ‘Rules of Play’ for our section. After a period of RFU trials in three counties over the last few years the new rules have now been adopted by Devon RFU and also our surrounding counties, as a point of interest the research evidence highlighting the need for a change in the coaching and playing structure of games in the lower age groups has come through Exeter University.

The new rules aim to focus more on individual players skill sets, allowing small sided games to increase inclusion and involvement, increase enjoyment and also simplify the rules of the game, which will in turn allow games to flow and develop more effectively the intention of this approach is to reduce the number of players dropping out of the game over these very important and impressionable years

We meet on a Sunday morning 10am from September to May at our Sidford training ground, the first few weeks of the season are spent learning the basics of the game and then we have scheduled a number of local fixtures against teams such as Exmouth, Withycombe, Honiton, Bridport, Crediton, Teignmouth, Cullompton, Exeter Youth and Topsham.

Under U10s level remains about having fun and allowing the children to develop their rugby  skills. We are fortunate that we have a big mix of both girls and boys in the team, so it’s a great environment for children to meet and create new friendships.

We have a great coaching team that are committed to helping players develop themselves as young people as well as rugby players.

All our coaches have experienced playing at a senior level and we actively encourage parents to get involved. A supportive parent/volunteer group helps make the whole rugby experience a team affair and highly enjoyable for player and adults alike

The basic rules of the U10 game are as follows:

-       No kicking of any kind

-       Only the ball carrier can be ‘Tackled’

-       Team numbers 7 or 8-a-side

-       60 m x 35 m pitch

-       Introduction of uncontested scrum (nearest 3 players)

-       Introduction of Maul

-       Introduction of Ruck

-       Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship

So why not come along and join our rugby family at Sidmouth RFC - even better why not bring some of your friends and classmates along as well. Our season starts this year on Sunday 2nd September 2018 at 10am at our Blackmore Ground in the centre of Sidmouth, directions and a map can also be found on the home page. This will be a welcome session for all new players and our first training session of the new season
