Charity Sevens Raises over £700

SIDMOUTH RUGBY CLUB CHARITY SEVENS

The final event of the rugby season took place at the Blackmore Field last Sunday. A good and well-humoured crowd was present for the Annual Charity Sevens Tournament, sponsored by Fords of Sidmouth, with further support from Dukes.

Eight teams took part and were divided into groups of four in a round robin qualifying stage. The team showing the best early form were guests from Topsham RFC, who scored a massive 132 points in winning Group One. Group Two winners, TC Top Cats, had much tougher passage. In the closest encounter of the day, they beat Suited And Booted (appropriately attired it must be said) 7-5. For the losers, Jamie Wardrop appeared to score a try, but the referee adjudged that he had needed an illegal two movements to complete the touchdown.

One of the loudest cheers of the day came when the Swan, making a welcome reappearance, scored their only try late in their third game. However, they were well beaten by the Colts, who qualified to meet the Allstars in a highly competitive Shield Final. In the end the youngsters overcame their disappointment of the previous day to score two late tries and secure a 28-19 victory.

The Plate Final was between Suited And Booted, made up of some of the senior members of the Chiefs, against S Club Seven, which name clearly marks them as being from an even older vintage. In the end experience proved to be the deciding factor as S Club Seven prevailed 24-10.

The Cup Final proved to be a one-sides affair. By late afternoon, TC Top Cats, containing a preponderance of younger Chiefs, had overcome their Saturday night hangovers sufficiently to find their best form. They overwhelmed Topsham 40 points to 7.

The trophies were presented by Mike Ford, representing the main sponsors. More than £700 was raised for the Hospital Comforts Fund.

A View from Chippenham

I am a Chippenham RFC man but, sadly, I could not get down for the game last Saturday. I understand it was a cracker. I read the match report on your site and felt I ought to drop you a line to say how nice it is to see a really good and balanced match report ( we are trying to do the same) Our guys said it was a great game, both teams made errors and both deserved points. The feeling was that Sidmouth will be a difficult place for any team to win and you deserve to be higher up the table. A great advert for South West Rugby. Good luck for the rest of the season.
