PRE-SEASON TRAINING STARTS

Pre-season training starts on Tuesday 4th July at the Blackmore Field starting at 7pm. Any new players will be most welcome and there will be a barbecue after training on Thursday 6th July to welcome players old and new.

Dan Retter is the new Head Coach to replace Tom Whelan, who has moved to Exmouth. Exeter Chiefs forward Shaun Malton as assistant coach looking after the forwards and defence. The new captain is influential forward Ollie Pyne.

The league season opens on Saturday 2nd September with a trip to St Austell. In preparation, three warm-up games have been arranged; 12th August at Wellington, 19th August Topsham at home and on 26th August Honiton will be at the Blackmore to contest for the David Turner Cup.

In a new initiative, the Club will be forming links with Bicton College to help develop rugby there for both male and female students while also providing opportunities for the students to play for Sidmouth. The venture is supported by the RFU as part of their programme to improve the recruitment and retention of players in the 16 to 21 age range.

Meanwhile, we are looking for a new physiotherapist to look after the senior players on training nights and the 1st Team on match days. Anyone interested should contact director of rugby Peter O’Brien on 07749 100536.

GEOFF PARLING GALA DINNER SUCCESS

Geoff Parling photo 1

Chairman Lester Willmington welcomed eighty six members, guests and sponsors, who attended a Gala Dinner, sponsored by Canterbury, in the clubhouse. Following a splendid three course meal provided by Duncan Woods and his team, Graham Brown introduced special guest Geoff Parling, who gave an account of his career at Newcastle Falcons, Leicester Tigers and, currently, Exeter Chiefs. Of his experience as an England international, he gave a particularly interesting insight into the unsuccessful Rugby World Cup 2015 campaign. Finally he described life as a British Lion on the 2013 tour to Australia, on which he played in three matches including the second test.

The talk was followed by a question and answer session in which he gave honest and frank replies to some searching questions.

The most enjoyable event raised over £1000 for club funds.
