On Friday 20th July more than 40 people were present at Sidmouth Rugby Club for an evening to thank the many volunteers who contribute to the smooth running of the Club.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation to the Club of the RFU Accreditation. This award is the governing body’s seal of approval to acknowledge that a club is organised and run to a high standard. The presentation of certificate and plaques was made by Devon Rugby Development Officer Jon Bendle.

Mr Bendle also presented the award of South West Regional Coach Development Club of the Year, and a RFU President’s Valued Volunteer certificate to Dan Goddard for his work in coach development.

Chairman Mark Seward added his praise for the work done by a large number of volunteers before presenting the Clubman of the Year Trophy to Dan Goddard. He went on to acknowledge the particular contributions made by Craig Morgan in driving forward the project to build the pavilion soon to be officially opened at Sidford, and former Treasurer Paul Whitehouse, who had to stand down recently due to ill health.

The outstanding long service of a few members was marked with special presentations. Life membership was conferred on President Derek Marchant after more 50 years and Match Secretary Robert Baugh after 45 years. A commemorative plaque went to Gerald Denner, who is standing down after many years as Membership Secretary.

Pride of place in the long service awards was reserved for Peter West, who received a special picture to recognise 60 years continuous service since he first joined the club as a player.

After the presentations were completed, a splendid buffet, prepared by club caterer Gill Hodge, was enjoyed by all.
