Rob Baxter Captivates a Full Club House

Sidmouth Rugby Club welcomed Exeter Chiefs Head Coach Rob Baxter as guest of honour for a Question & Answer Evening on Friday. The recently refurbished club was packed with players and supporters and the event was a huge success. Club Chairman Lester Wilmington introduced the Premiership coach, presented him with a Sidmouth RFC tie and Mrs Jo Baxter with a bunch of flowers. Lester then handed over to Club Captain Dan Retter who was a very slick and professional compere for the evening.

The first question came from players Hannah Vicary and Laiken Swain who asked about plans for an Exeter Chiefs Ladies team and this was followed by topical sporting questions from junior players including Oliver Mitchell, Henry Williams and William Cockayne, who asked about teamwork. Rob explained that at Sandy Park the Chiefs coaching team analyse and pick individual ‘highlights’ for each player so they can demonstrate where a good action has the potential to create a try for someone else. There were also questions from senior players and members including Aiden Taylor, Rory O’Brien, Jud Lascelles, Mark Ross, Tanya Mitchell and Ollie Salter and the audience heard why Rob chose Mohammed Ali and Paula Radcliffe as his favourite sports stars of all time.

Rob Baxter captivated the big audience with his honesty, his engaging personality and his support of the game at local, premiership and international level. For any young player his opinions about commitment, team work, personality and responsibility were fascinating and relevant.

After the questions Rob chatted with junior players, autographed Exeter Chiefs team posters and joined-in with selfies and photographs.

Inevitably Rob was asked about his ambitions to coach at international level and whether Henry Slade and Sam Burgess would make the final 31 in the England RWC squad – to find out his responses you should contact one of the crowd who was there…!
