The rugby season came to a close at the Blackmore Field on Sunday when the club held tha Annual Charity Sevens competition sponsored by Fords of Sidmouth.

Nine teams contested for three trophies. The teams were placed in three groups of three for a round robin qualifying round. The top team in each group and the best second placed team went forward into the Cup semi finals. The remaining second place teams and the two third placed teams with the best records played off for the Shield.

Group A was won by Dalton Wanderers from Exmouth, who were pushed hard by TOB Panthers made up of the youngest of Sidmouth’s senior players. Cup holders, and favourites,  TC Top Cats topped group B but had strong competition from MKAS,  predominantly players who were approaching the veteran stage.

The most competitive game came in group C, where the Dwarfs from Sidmouth 2nd team edged out Pidge Mix 7 from Honiton 14-10.

Pidge Mix 7 comfortable won their Shield semi final against the Colts B team Buffy and Rachel. The Colts A team, under the name Bagwell’s Mum, put up stern resistance before losing out to MKAS by 23-17.

In the Cup semi finals, Dalton Wanderers beat TC Top Cats, who had perhaps spent too much preparation time in the Swan. And TOB Panthers beat The Dwarfs.

Thus TC Top Cats and the Dwarfs played off for the consolation prize of the Plate. The Top Cats regained enough form to win 29-12.

The Shield final was a hard fought affair in which Pidge Mix 7 beat MKAS 17-5.

Dalton Wanderers  overcame TOB Panthers 31-7 to win the top prize.

The Event raised over £500 for Sidmouth Scouts, which will be topped up by a donation from Pizza Buono, who kept the supporters well fed with their delicious creations.
