Sidmouth warms up for the Rugby World Cup in the spring sunshine.

Saturday 21st March saw a fun filled day of Rugby at Sidmouth RFC, in what was called a warm up for the clubs world cup celebrations.

The day kicked off in glorious sunshine with U7s and U8s having there very own mini 6 nations tag tournament, this was organised by Saul Vickery and his team of coaches who put together a great event that was enjoyed by all.

The Bagwell family organised a selection of rugby orientated games that was managed by some willing older rugby players from the colt’s squad. It offered a rugby style assault course that helped all the players enjoy themselves, pick up or fine tune their rugby skills.

A huge splash of delicious homemade cakes, many of which were rugby themed, was put together by Heather Bagwell, Buffy Cavin and a great team of parents from the junior teams. Phil & Sharon Thorne delighted many spectators and players with their homemade burgers and Diana and Rob Woodhouse perfectly orchestrated the refreshment tent.

The televised Italy vs. Wales game kicked off and the Rugby ladies separated off for a posh lunch prepared by the Club chef Duncan Woods. The 6 nation’s tension was building as Sidmouth 1st team took to the field to take on a strong squad from Tavistock kicking off at 2pm again in great spring weather. After a well supported game Sidmouth 1st team came out victorious 30-17.

Wales had made an impressive grab for the title with a strong win over Italy and Ireland now had to beat Scotland by at least 21 points difference.

At this stage the Sidmouth Colts took to the field against Ivybridge. With Colts tails up and eager to make the most of the occasion they put in a spirited performance and came away deserved winners 51-17

Ireland’s impressive win over Scotland meant they had now taken the lead in the championship, so all eyes were on the finale know as ‘Le Crunch’  where England took on France at Twickenham and with both bars full of cheering supporters England came away proud winners of the game but just missed out on the title by a converted try.

Celebrations continued with a raffle draw and an open mic event led by the talented Malachi Raynor. The following songs showed that many players were not just talented rugby players, impressive for most part but dwindled a little after some well earned exuberance.

Club Rugby Secretary Terry O’Brien sums up the day.

“It was a very successful day with the incredible drama of the finale to the 6 Nation Championships the icing on the cake. It highlighted the quality of rugby experience the club offers from U7 tag to adult 1st team through youth age groups. It also showed the contribution of a large, dedicated team of volunteers who make it all possible. We are definitely ready to open our doors to the local community as the centre of Rugby World Cup in Sidmouth.”

Club Chairman Lester Willmington added "The whole day was a fantastic trial run for the club's approach to the Rugby World Cup this autumn. An action packed day started with the mini tag tournament which was very well supported. It was great to see so many people in the club enjoying a feast of rugby very ably supported by our dedicated volunteers. The Ladies luncheon was a great success with the distraction of the finale of the 6 Nations showcasing what a great spectacle rugby at all levels can be.
