Match Reports

Sidmouth played host to a Tag Rugby festival for 7-15 year olds this Sunday. We were blessed by sunshine and over 40 girls turned up to be coached in their age groups by some of Sidmouth's U18 girls and then take part in the Tag festival.

The coaching covered evasion, kicking and for the older girls, an introduction to tackling. It was then on to the main event, a series of Tag games, which would get the winning team a headstart on the last game. With 3 teams of coloured headband teams, The Champs and Cleos Team the festival got started. The younger players attracted a lot of attention, their tries scoring 2 points to the older girls one, with Maddie Russell scoring a number for her team. After a good start by the green headbands the overall winners, the aptly named Champs, soon started to pull away. This gave them a 10 second advantage on the final game to test their throwing accuracy and evasion skills - a water bomb fight!

Thanks to the girls and the parents who helped out making it a fun day when the sun thankfully shone!

Sidmouth Vs Tewkesbury U15s

RFU  spoon final  - 7 aside

The game was played at the Blackmore with the sun shining and a good crowd of supporters.

The game was to be played over 4 1/4s of 10 mins .. Sidmouth looked in good form from the start ,with quick ball through the hands they scored 9 tries in the first 10 mins . The referee advised   we call the game at 50 and then play a friendly . So Sidmouth girls in true sporting fashion played with 5 players to give Tewkesbury width and space to attack .This worked for the visitors scoring 3 tries .  Sidmouth managed to put  29 tries on the board and this has been our most successful game to date.It was a fantastic team effort and great to see, well done girls .

Girls U13 Rugby Festival

Sidmouth hosted its first U13 girls rugby festival on a bright Sunday morning in the marvelous grounds of St Johns school, who were hosting the event. Teams arrived from Exeter Saracens, Cullompton, Crediton, Newton Abbot and Sidmouth to each compete in 4 grueling 10 minute 7 aside matches.
The Sidmouth girls combined with Newton Abbot for their games including eventual Player of the Festival Nayana Aitkein-Smith. The Sidmouth match against Crediton was a closely fought battle that bought tries from Esme Bagwell, Lucy Tanner and Ellie Wood with Crediton narrowly winning 4-3. The Sidmouth try of the match however was scored in the final match vs Exeter Sarries with Cleo Turley repeatedly running at the defense until she finally broke through with an Exeter player hanging  on to her to score.
The match vs Cullompton was played in great spirit from the 2 younger sides in the festival. The ability shown in the side steps and linked running shows that these 2 teams will produce formidable sides as they mature. Both sides showed great pace testing the referee at times to keep up with the game which ended in a 4-4 draw.
The deserved winners were Exeter Saracens red team who even beat Exeter Saracens green team playing with 1 less player. Thanks to the coaches and parents for providing an excellent atmosphere for the girls to really enjoy their rugby and to the referees Mark and Charlie Ross.

Sidmouth Vs Newton Services U15 Girls

Sidmouth Newton Services Cup Match 1

Sidmouth's U15's attended Devonport for their Cup Game against Newton Services today.  They entered the pitch with their heads held high but still weary from their travel.

In the first few minutes Newton Services scored their first try, but no conversion shortly followed by a further 2 trys and 2 conversions. Sidmouth's heads went down but they were not going to be beaten and soon scored their first try of the game followed by a fantastic conversion both by Hannah Vicary. Newton Services seemed to tire but at the end of the first half were still ahead of Sidmouth at 26 - 12.

Sidmouth came back onto the pitch with all girls raring to go so not to show defeat, played some amazing rugby and they showed total determination.  Team play was part of this matches triumph. Louise Wyatt, scored the first try of the second half running straight down the wing with Newton Services on her heels. Hannah Vicary slipped through like she was invisible to score her second try of the game. Newton Services pushed themselves, battling their way through Sidmouth to slip in another try. Sidmouth were on a role, Laika Swain to steal the ball and hit the line.  Sooner than expected Yasmine Whitrow broke free from the clan and ran the full length of the pitch to score her first try of the game. Robyn Gillings took the ball at the 25 m line and took it into touch yet another try.  Newton Services some how slipped through the fingers of Sidmouth, but Sidmouth weren't worried as they still had room to make another run. Yasmine Whitrow took Sidmouths last few minutes to score the last try of the game. Well played game and fantastic tactics from the girls after waking up in the second half and what a come back. Following all Hannah Vicary's well deserved conversions the game ended Sidmouth 50 - 36 Newton Services.
